Benson Idahosa University, a private institution of higher learning in Edo State, has appealed to the Federal Government to amend the Education Tax Fund law.
According to the school’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Gideon Omuta, who addressed the press on Monday, ahead of its fourth convocation ceremony, an amendment of the law should be carried out to make private universities beneficiaries like their public counterparts. Omuta said finance was the biggest challenge confronting private universities in the country and wondered why they were not being considered to benefit from the ETF since no gainfully employed citizen exempted from paying tax. He said, “We would like to appeal to the Federal Government to amend the ETF law to make private universities to benefit from the fund like the public ones.” He also debunked recent claims that the school was in the receivership of a bank (he did not mention the bank’s name). He said, “I am aware that there is a publication that claimed BIU was under receivership of a bank. I want to state categorically and authoritatively that BIU is not under any receivership whatsoever.” |
